Mental Health First Aid Training

October 3, 2019 @ 9:00 am - 5:00 pm

Mental Health First Aid is a global movement, the first of its kind to be translated across cultures and languages in 22 countries.  Mental Health First Aid seeks to improve and increase mental health awareness and provide the skills necessary to have a non-judgmental conversation and encourage support.

All delegates will learn how to :

  • Provide information, tools and techniques to promote a person’s mental and emotional wellbeing, including their own.
  • Support a person who might be experiencing mental and emotional distress, including those in suicidal crisis.

Mental Health First Aid is a training program that teaches you how to help a person developing a mental health problem (including a substance use problem), experiencing a worsening of an existing mental health problem or in a mental health crisis.

The sessions will be a mix of presentation, group discussions and group work activities. We have two extremely experienced and recommended facilitators for the course who are there to provide a very safe learning environment and are trained to support you throughout the two day course as it is a very in-depth course.

Due to some of the sensitive subjects of our course, including suicide, we limit numbers to 20 delegates. We want all delegates to feel safe and our tutors can help if any areas cause some concern.

The course covers the following:

  • What is Mental Health? Mental Health Continuum
  • Suicide, harm, self-harm and harm to others
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Psychosis
  • Substance use disorders
  • Other related factors

In each session you’ll learn how to:

  • Spot the early signs of a mental health problem
  • Feel confident helping a person experiencing a mental health problem
  • Provide help on a first aid basis
  • Help protect a person who might be at risk of harm including suicide intervention
  • Help prevent a mental health illness from getting worse
  • Help a person recover faster
  • Guide a person towards the right support
  • Reduce the stigma of mental health problems

Each course is delivered by two quality assured tutors, who have attended the instructor training programme accredited by Public Health Agency and Mental health First Aid. During the training, you will receive a manual and information pack for your use at the end of the course and also a certificate from Mental Health First Aid Northern Ireland Training Programme to say you are now a certified Mental Health First Aider.
